Hong Kong Crypto Scams Surge in 2025, Victims Lose $4.7 Million

Hong Kong Police reported a 30.7% increase in online investment fraud incidents in 2025, with 5,135 cases documented. Social media platforms and messaging apps were the primary channels for scammers, reaching 80.4% of victims before the attacks.

A woman in her 50s lost HK$31 million (USD $3.955 million) in a crypto romance scam after a fraudster posing as a potential tenant manipulated her into investing through fake crypto websites. This marked the largest single loss among over 1,000 similar cases last year.

Romance scams rose by 8.2% in 2025, with 1,093 cases reported compared to 1,010 in 2024. Separately, a 66-year-old retiree lost his entire savings of $842,567 to a crypto investment scam.
